The first thing is the light on the parquet — long, low, filtered through the tall casement windows of a Marais building that has stood here for centuries.

Step outside and you're on cobbles. The Centre Pompidou is a five-minute walk, Place des Vosges slightly further, and rue de Bretagne with the Marché des Enfants Rouges pulls you in for lunch — Moroccan tagine, natural wine, oysters at the counter.

It suits a family spread across generations, or two or three couples travelling together. What stays with you is the quiet inside the apartment while le quartier hums on beneath the windows.

Sal a la calle y la rue des Rosiers ya está despierta: el olor al aceite del falafel de L'As, el traqueteo de un carrito de reparto sobre los adoquines, un señor mayor leyendo Le Monde a las puertas del café-tabac. Le Marais guarda sus horarios dominicales: las galerías abren cuando las boutiques cierran, y los patios del Village Saint-Paul se llenan de anticuarios colocando plata sobre caballetes.

Para el café, la maison manda a todo el mundo al Boot Café, en la rue du Pont aux Choux: tres mesas, el antiguo letrero de cordonnerie todavía sobre la puerta, un flat white que vale la pena esperar. Ve antes de las 10h, llévalo hasta el Square Léopold-Achille y habrás empezado la mañana como se debe.
