Grands Boulevards is a two-minute walk — métro in one direction, the covered Passage Jouffroy in the other. Opéra sits east, Montmartre climbs north.

Built for two. A couple on a long weekend, or one person settling in for a week of wandering. What stays with you is the quiet — a courtyard hush, a few streets off the boulevard.

Sales a la calle y la cuesta empieza de inmediato: la rue des Martyrs inclinándose hacia la butte, el olor a mantequilla caliente de Arnaud Delmontel antes incluso de haber decidido hacia dónde girar. Una florista saca cubos a la acera, el estanco de la esquina sirve sus primeros cafés, y el 9e despierta a su manera: mitad barrio, mitad bastidores del teatro de Montmartre allá arriba.

Por la mañana, el tramo bajo de la rue des Martyrs funciona como una verdadera calle de mercado: Sébastien Gaudard en el número 22 para el éclair café, o un baba au rhum si te lo has ganado. Los vecinos hacen cola sin comentarios; se sobreentiende. Llévatelo al apartamento, o cómetelo en los escalones de Notre-Dame-de-Lorette y observa cómo el barrio se va ordenando solo.
