Stap naar buiten en je staat op de helling achter Montmartre, waar het 17e arrondissement overgaat in iets huiselijkers — de bakkerij in de rue des Moines met haar rij om 8 uur, de groene Wallace-fontein op place de Lévis, een slager in een wit schort die zijn stuk stoep aanveegt voor de ochtendspits.

Voor de markt loop je op dinsdag of zaterdag de rue de Lévis af — een overdekte straatmarkt die de Batignolles al sinds de jaren 1840 voedt. Koop een rotisseriekip bij het kraampje halverwege, een stokbrood bij de bakkerij die het lekkerst ruikt, en lunch terug in la maison.
