Inside, 43m² unfolds into an open kitchen, a living room built around the old shopfront, and a mezzanine tucked under a 90cm ceiling — a sleeping nook, not a bedroom. Air conditioning, a private indoor parking spot, and self check-in by lockbox handle the practical side.

Canal Saint-Martin is a short walk east, but the real find is closer: Marché Saint-Quentin, the covered market on boulevard de Magenta, for oysters at the counter and cheese to take home.

It sleeps six across a sofa bed, two singles, and the mezzanine — better suited to friends or a family who like each other than to six adults wanting their own walls. What stays with you is the light through those filtered windows.

Stap naar buiten en het 10e arrondissement onthult zich in lagen: de lange lijn van het Canal Saint-Martin twee straten verderop, scooters geparkeerd langs de rue Bichat, de geur van boter uit een bakkerij voor 8 uur, en de ijzeren voetbruggen waar altijd wel iemand een foto staat te maken. 's Avonds vullen de oevers van het kanaal zich met mensen op de stenen, flessen rosé tussen hun voeten, het water groen en traag.

Voor koffie loop je naar Ten Belles in de rue de la Grange aux Belles — een smalle ruimte, een flat white die zich moeiteloos meet met alles in de wijk, en een rij die snel doorschuift. Bestel hem to go en steek over naar het kanaal; het bankje tegenover de sluis is in het ochtendlicht de plek om naartoe te koersen.
