Best for a couple or a small family on a short Paris trip — the kind of stay where you leave the guidebook behind and just walk. What stays with you is the view from the front door.

Stap naar buiten en het geroezemoes van de rue de Rivoli is al gedempt door de arcade — de zuilengang van het Palais-Royal ligt vlakbij, met de zwart-witte Buren-columns die kinderen en fotografen aantrekken nog voor de tuinen goed en wel opengaan. Le matin behoort toe aan de bestelwagens op de rue Saint-Honoré en het geluid van de toneeldeur van de Comédie-Française die aan de overkant van het plein van het slot gaat.

Voor koffie loop je onder de arcade door naar Café Kitsuné in de tuinen van het Palais-Royal — een klein buffet naast de rozenbedden waar je een matcha of espresso bestelt en die staand opdrinkt, terwijl je toekijkt hoe iemand Le Monde leest op een groen metalen stoel. Het zijn de rustigste tien minuten van de wijk, en de reden om aan deze kant van het Louvre te blijven.
