Stap naar buiten en de rue des Rosiers is al wakker — de falafelkraampjes nog met gesloten luiken om 9 uur, maar de gele gevel van Sacha Finkelsztajn gaat al open, en de rij bij Miznon is nog niet begonnen. Twee straten verderop rammelen bij de Marché des Enfants Rouges de ijzeren hekken open, en de schoolkinderen van het 4e arrondissement snijden via de place du Marché-Sainte-Catherine een hoekje af op weg naar school.

Ons vaste ankerpunt is Café Charlot aan de rue de Bretagne — niet voor de toeristen op het terras, maar voor de toonbank binnen waar een espresso 1,50€ kost staand aan de bar. Ga vroeg, voor de brunchemenigte arriveert. Bestel hem als noisette en blijf tien minuten; het is de snelste manier om je thuis te voelen in een wijk die haar vaste bewoners koestert.
