Place des Vosges is five minutes on foot. Beyond it, rue de Bretagne and the Marché des Enfants Rouges — oysters at the counter, Moroccan tagines, a glass of something cold by noon.

It sleeps seven, which makes it a quartier base for a family or a group of friends. What stays with you is the cour: stepping back into silence after a day on the boulevards.

Stap naar buiten en je staat in het kleine stratenpatroon tussen rue des Rosiers en rue Vieille-du-Temple, waar de falafelrijen zich tegen het middaguur vormen en de chassidische bakkers dienbladen over het trottoir dragen voordat ze opengaan. De Monoprix aan rue Saint-Antoine zorgt voor het avondlijke basiswerk; de rest bestaat uit boekhandels, keramisten en het soort galeries dat zijn openingstijden niet bekendmaakt.

Maak van L'As du Fallafel de makkelijke lunch en van Café Charlot de trage ochtend — maar het echte ankerpunt is Marché des Enfants Rouges, twee straten naar het noorden aan rue de Bretagne. De oudste overdekte markt van Parijs, in bedrijf sinds 1615. Ga voor de Marokkaanse kraam, schuif aan bij de gedeelde tafels, bestel de tajine en een glas rosé voordat de zaterdagdrukte rond 13u neerstrijkt.
