You're a few minutes from Grands Boulevards métro, the Galeries Lafayette, and the slope up toward Montmartre. Walk five minutes to rue des Martyrs for the bakeries, the cheese shop, the late coffee.

Built for two — a couple on a short city break, or one traveller settling in for longer. What stays with you is the courtyard: a pocket of silence, right in the middle of everything.

Zodra je buiten staat, begint de helling meteen — de rue des Martyrs loopt schuin omhoog richting de butte, de geur van warme boter uit Arnaud Delmontel bereikt je nog voor je hebt besloten welke kant je opgaat. Een bloemist zet zijn emmers op de stoep, de tabac op de hoek neemt de eerste koffiebestellingen aan, en het 9e arrondissement ontwaakt op die kenmerkende manier: half woonbuurt, half coulisse voor Montmartre erboven.

Le matin verandert het onderste stuk van de rue des Martyrs in een heuse marktstraat — Sébastien Gaudard op nummer 22 voor een éclair café, of een baba au rhum als je het verdiend hebt. Buurtbewoners staan zonder morren in de rij; zo gaat dat nu eenmaal. Neem het mee terug naar het appartement, of eet het op de trappen van Notre-Dame-de-Lorette en kijk hoe de wijk zichzelf op orde brengt.
