Lavie Maison: Vlakbij Arc de Triomphe, Hot Tub & Airco

Step out of the building and the avenue tilts toward the Arc de Triomphe — ten minutes on foot, lit up at the end of the street like a stage set.

Inside, fifteen square metres do quite a lot at once. A jacuzzi tub for the long soak after a long day, air conditioning for August, a proper little kitchen for the morning espresso.

The 17e is the quieter side of the western city — Batignolles villagey to the north, Ternes for the cheese shops and the Sunday market on rue Poncelet, where the rotisserie chickens turn in the window.

It's a studio built for two: a couple on a short escape, or one person who wants Paris without the lobby and the small talk. What stays with you is the bath, and the walk home past the Arc.

Wanneer je de brede trottoirs van het 17e betreedt, valt allereerst de stilte op — haussmanniaanse panden, een conciërge die de entree veegt, de geur van boter uit een bakkerij voordat de ochtendrij zich vormt. De avenue de Wagram trekt je zuidwaarts richting de Arc; ga noordwaarts en je bent in Batignolles voordat je je koffie op hebt.

Zoek Rue de Lévis op, een marktstraat die de wijk al sinds de 19e eeuw voedt. Van dinsdag tot en met zondag openen de kramen rond 8u — ga voor de grillkip van de slager bij nummer 23, later opgegeten op een bankje in Square des Batignolles met een met de hand gescheurd stokbrood.
