It suits a couple, or a solo traveller staying a while — the kind who'd rather have one good café downstairs than a hotel lobby. What stays with you is the quiet, two floors above the street.

Stap naar buiten en je staat aan de rustige kant van het 2e — het deel waar de oude stoffenwinkels van Sentier hun metalen rolluiken nog steeds tijdens de lunch laten zakken, waar een man in een bezorgvest altijd dubbel geparkeerd staat op rue d'Aboukir, en de bakkerij op de hoek van rue du Caire vanaf 7u naar boter ruikt. De stoep is smal. De gebouwen hellen lichtjes. Niemand heeft haast, behalve de fietskoeriers.

Voor koffie loop je vijf minuten naar Télescope op rue Villedo — een smal kamertje, acht stoelen, één espressomachine die al sinds 2012 draait. Bestel de filterkoffie, drink hem staand, kijk hoe rue Sainte-Anne om je heen wakker wordt. Het soort plek dat de wijk graag voor zichzelf houdt.
