The studio opens into one bright room — kitchen, table, sofa, screen. Upstairs, the sleeping nook sits low (35 inches to the ceiling), made up in proper hotel linens. Self-check-in by lockbox, so arrive when you arrive.

You're in the 9e, a few streets from rue des Martyrs and its morning parade of bakeries, fromageries and the queue outside Sébastien Gaudard. Pigalle to the north, the Grands Boulevards south.

Best for a solo traveller or a couple who'd rather spend money on dinner than on square metres. What stays with you is the climb to bed, and the smell of butter from the street below.

Stap de deur uit en de 9e arrondissement ontvouwt zich om je heen: de helling omlaag richting Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, een bloemist die emmers op de stoep zet, het gerommel van metrolijn 12 onder de rue de Châteaudun. 's Ochtends ruikt het naar boter uit de bakkerij op de hoek en naar diesel van de scooters die voor de tabakszaak staan te stationair draaien. Tegen elven hebben de zijstraten tussen Saint-Georges en Pigalle zich gevuld met mensen die hier overduidelijk wonen.

Voor koffie loop je vijf minuten naar de rue des Martyrs — de marktstraat die heuvelopwaarts richting Montmartre loopt. KB Caféshop zet een fatsoenlijke flat white, maar het echte ritueel is de patisserie van Sébastien Gaudard op nummer 22: een tarte au citron staand opgegeten, zoals de wijk dat doet sinds de winkel in 2011 heropende.
