Downstairs, the studio opens up: kitchen with oven and dishwasher, a dining table for two, a workspace by the window. Wine glasses in the cupboard, hotel linens on the bed.

You're in SoPi, the pocket of Pigalle that traded neon for natural wine. Rue des Martyrs is around the corner — the bakeries, the fromagerie, the flower stall that anchors the whole street.

It suits a couple on a short stay, or one traveller who wants to live like a *neuvième* local for a week. What stays with you is the staircase, and the quiet of a ground-floor door closing behind you.

Stap naar buiten en de rue des Martyrs helt voor je naar beneden — het raam van de fromagerie beslagen van de ochtend, al een rij voor Sébastien Gaudard voor de kouign-amann, en de andere kant op gluurt de Sacré-Cœur tussen de daken door. De tabac op de hoek van rue Victor Massé blijft tot laat open; de seksshops van het oude Pigalle hebben grotendeels plaatsgemaakt voor natuurwijncafés, maar het neon flikkert na middernacht nog altijd op de Boulevard de Clichy.

Reserveer een krukje bij Buvette op rue Henry Monnier — Jody Williams' intieme gastrothèque, croque-monsieur en een glas Chinon aan de zinken bar, elleboog aan elleboog met wie er naast je zit. Dit is de ruimte die het acroniem SoPi deed beklijven, en die nog steeds het ritme van de buurt bepaalt van de brunch tot het laatste rondje.
