Inside, a high-end convertible sofa does the double shift as living room and bed. The kitchen is fully kitted — coffee machine, oven, wine glasses lined up — and the parquet keeps things warm underfoot.

Step out and you're minutes from rue des Batignolles, where the Sunday marché biologique spills across the median and locals queue for oysters before noon. Montmartre and the Sacré-Cœur sit a walk away, uphill.

It suits a couple on a long Paris weekend, or one traveller in town for work. What stays with you is the quiet — a rare thing, this close to everything.

Stap naar buiten en je bevindt je aan de stillere kant van de binnenste rand van de périphérique — de rue des Épinettes strekt zich lang en laag uit, omzoomd door garages, een Portugese kruidenier, een bloemist die tegen 8 uur emmers op de stoep zet. Het metrostation Guy Môquet gonst, maar bulkt nooit. Oudere bewoners staan in de rij bij de bakkerij; kinderen snijden op scooters dwars door Square des Épinettes. Het voelt bewóónd aan, niet bekéken.

Op zaterdagochtend ontvouwt le marché des Batignolles zich langs de boulevard de Batignolles — oesters op bestelling geopend, een rôtisserie waarvan de aardappels garen in het kippevet onder het spit. Kom voor 11 uur, loop terug via de rue Lemercier met een warm stokbrood, en je begrijpt waarom mensen die naar deze wijk verhuizen, er doorgaans blijven.
