Stap naar buiten en je staat aan de hellingkant van het 17e, waar de avenue de Clichy omhoog begint te klimmen richting de Butte. De bakkerij aan de rue des Dames heeft om 8u al een rij, de tabac op de hoek van de rue Lemercier lijkt nooit te sluiten, en de stoepen hebben die licht ontregelde Batignolles-helling — rustiger dan Montmartre zelf, maar dezelfde heuvel ligt al onder je voeten.

Voor le matin loop je vijf minuten naar de marché biologique des Batignolles aan de boulevard de Courcelles — alleen op zaterdag, oesters ter plekke geopend op de stoeprand en een grillkip die het ommetje rechtvaardigt. Daarna de bankjes in de square des Batignolles, waar de buurtbewoners Libération lezen en de reigers daadwerkelijk in de vijver nestelen.
