Step outside and you're in SoPi, the sliver of the 9e below Pigalle. Rue des Martyrs runs downhill from here — a working village of fromagers, pâtissiers, and the tiny counter at Sébastien Gaudard for a mid-afternoon éclair.

It's a studio for one traveller, or two who don't mind climbing to bed. What they'll take home is the ritual of the quartier — coffee in hand, the slope of Martyrs at 9am, Paris waking up around them.
