Uscite e rue Cler è a due minuti a piedi — la strada pedonale del mercato dove il fromagier, il pescivendolo e il banco dei fiori occupano ancora il marciapiede entro le 9. Guardate da un lato e la cupola des Invalides cattura la luce; guardate dall'altro e siete già al Champ-de-Mars, con i jogger che tracciano diagonali sulla ghiaia prima che arrivino i gruppi turistici.

Il Café Central al 40 rue Cler è il posto dove la gente del quartiere si siede davvero — un'omelette au jambon al bancone di zinco, un bicchiere di Chinon a pranzo, gli stessi habitué che leggono Le Figaro vicino alla finestra. Non è una scoperta, è un'abitudine — ed è proprio questo il punto. Arrivate prima di mezzogiorno e vi spetta il tavolo d'angolo sotto la tenda.
