Chartrons wears its wine-trade past on its sleeve — antique dealers on rue Notre-Dame, the Sunday marché des Quais along the Garonne, coffee at one of the tabacs before the shutters go up.

Made for one, comfortable for two, with a pet welcome if you ask first. What you'll remember: how easy it was to drop your bag and disappear into le quartier.

Esci e le facciate in pietra calcarea dei Chartrons si stendono pallide e basse lungo la rue Notre-Dame — antiquari che lucidano gli ottoni in vetrina, un commerciante di vini che spinge fuori le casse, la campanella del tram dal quai a un isolato di distanza. La luce qui è diversa da quella del Triangle: più ampia, più morbida, con il fiume appena dietro i tetti.

I sabati mattina appartengono al Marché des Chartrons sul quai, tra il pont de Pierre e la Cité du Vin. Andateci prima delle 10h per le ostriche del Bassin d'Arcachon, un calice di Entre-deux-Mers e il pane della boulangerie di rue Sicard. L'équipe vi dirà quale bancarella prepara i cannelés come si deve — piccoli, scuri, quasi bruciati ai bordi.
