Step out and you're in SoPi — South Pigalle — where Rue des Martyrs runs uphill past Sébastien Gaudard's pâtisserie, wine bars, and the fromagerie queue on Saturday mornings.

It suits one traveller or a couple who like Paris compact and central, and who won't mind the low ceiling upstairs. What stays with you is the street — l'équipe promises — not the square metres.

Uscite e la rue des Martyrs scende in pendio davanti a voi — la vetrina della fromagerie appannata dal mattino, una fila che si forma già da Sébastien Gaudard per il kouign-amann, e dall'altra parte il Sacré-Cœur che fa capolino tra i tetti. Il tabac all'angolo con la rue Victor Massé resta aperto fino a tardi; i sex shop della vecchia Pigalle hanno per lo più ceduto il posto a wine bar naturali, ma al neon tremola ancora sul Boulevard de Clichy dopo la mezzanotte.

Prenotate uno sgabello da Buvette in rue Henry Monnier — la piccola gastrothèque di Jody Williams, croque-monsieur e un bicchiere di Chinon al banco di zinco, gomito a gomito con chiunque vi sieda accanto. È il locale che ha fatto attecchire l'acronimo SoPi, e detta ancora il ritmo del quartiere dal brunch all'ultimo giro.
