Stap naar buiten en het geroezemoes van de rue de Rivoli is er al, arcade-galerijen aan je linkerhand, de vergulde hekken van de tuinen van het Palais-Royal recht tegenover je. Sla de hoek om en je bevindt je in het stillere straatpatroon van de rue de Montpensier of de rue de Beaujolais, waar het licht smaller wordt en de toeristen dunner worden. 's Ochtends zijn het voornamelijk locals die met een koffie door de colonnade snijden.

Voor die koffie: ga naar Télescope op de rue Villedo — een smal zaakje, tien stoelen, een filtermenu dat wekelijks wisselt. Bestel de flat white en een canelé aan de toonbank, loop dan twee minuten naar de fonteinen van het Palais-Royal en ga op de stenen rand zitten. Die korte rondgang is het hele betoog van de buurt.
