The first thing is the water — the sound of the jacuzzi filling, the light off the tiles, the sense that the sea is closer than you thought. Five hundred metres, in fact.

The apartment sits on one level, air-conditioned against the August heat, blackout curtains drawn on the bedroom. A proper kitchen with dishwasher and oven, wine glasses in the cupboard, a workspace by the window for the morning after.

Grosso keeps its own rhythm — quieter than the Carré d'Or, close enough to walk to the Promenade des Anglais before breakfast. Rue de France handles the rest: a boulangerie, a café, an evening apéro without needing a plan.

It's built for two, or a couple with a small one (there's a crib, and pets are welcome with notice). What you'll take home is the bubbelbad at the end of a long day walking Vieux Nice — feet up, sea air, la maison quiet around you.

Stap naar buiten en je bevindt je in het rustigere westelijke deel van Nice, waar avenue de la Californie lang en vlak richting zee loopt, en de gebouwen dat bleke interbellum-stucwerk hebben dat het licht om 8u opvangt. Ergens bij Grosso klinkt een trambelletje, de krantenverkoper op de hoek opent zijn rolluik, en de geur van pain aux raisins waait vanuit de bakkerij twee deuren verderop.

Ga 's ochtends naar de marché de la Libération, tien minuten verderop op de lijn — Niçoise oma's die ruziën over socca, nog warme tomaten en een kleine kraam die pissaladière per punt verkoopt. Bestel het ingepakt in papier en eet het al lopend. Het is het enige waardoor je begrijpt waarom mensen hier zelden de moeite nemen om naar Cours Saleya te gaan.
