Esci e il 16° si presenta in sordina: ampie facciate haussmanniane su rue de Passy, un fioraio che sistema le peonie prima delle 9h, scolari in uniforme che attraversano place de Costa Rica. La Torre Eiffel lampeggia tra i tetti in fondo a certe strade, quasi en passant. Il mattino qui è senza fretta — chi porta a spasso il cane, una fila alla boulangerie di rue de l'Annonciation, qualcuno che legge Le Monde fuori da Carette.

Per un caffè e un vero croissant, dirigiti da Carette in place du Trocadéro — la terrazza dà sul Palais de Chaillot, e i macarons pistache tengono fedeli i clienti abituali da decenni. Arriva alle 8h prima dei gruppi turistici, ordina un café crème e osserva i jogger che rientrano dall'esplanade con la torre alle spalle.
