Rue Saint-Merri wakes slowly. The bells of the church next door mark the hours, and by mid-morning the smell of coffee drifts up from the café on the corner.

Sixty-one square metres on the first floor, lift included. Three bedrooms, two bathrooms — one with a proper jacuzzi tub — and air conditioning for the warm weeks in July. The kitchen is set up to actually cook in.

Beaubourg is the quartier. The Centre Pompidou is two minutes on foot, but the better ritual is Marché des Enfants Rouges on a Sunday morning — the oldest covered market in Paris, still full of Moroccan traders and flower sellers.

This one suits a family, or two couples sharing. What they tend to remember is coming home tired at midnight and sinking into the jacuzzi while the Marais goes quiet outside.

Per una mattina più lenta, camminate due minuti fino a Le Petit Marché su rue de Béarn, oppure accomodatevi al Café Beaubourg sulla piazza — la terrazza si affaccia sulle scale mobili del Centre Pompidou, e se ordinate un noisette e vi sedete abbastanza a lungo, vedrete scorrere l'intero quartiere: galleristi che aprono, studenti d'arte che fumano, qualcuno che abbozza sempre la fontana.
