Stap naar buiten en het licht raakt eerst de bleke steen — de lage, brede gevels van de oude wijnhandelaarshuizen langs de rue Notre-Dame, luiken half open, een bestelbus die voorzichtig langs de antiekhandelaren rijdt die nog stoelen buiten zetten. Er is een bakkerij twee deuren verderop waar rond 8 uur canelés uit de oven komen, en de tram glijdt langs de quai des Chartrons zonder de ochtend ook maar enigszins te verstoren.

Op zondag strekt le marché des Chartrons zich uit langs de kade — oesters uit Arcachon ter plekke opengesneden, een glas Entre-deux-Mers voor elven, niemand die zich daarvoor verontschuldigt. Ga vroeg, voordat de menigte uit Saint-Louis arriveert. Als u maar één keer stopt, kies dan voor de buren van Chez Alriq voor de oesters; l'équipe daar weet welke producent die ochtend is binnengekomen.
