The first thing you'll notice is the jacuzzi tucked into one of the bathrooms — deep enough for two, lit low.

Three bedrooms sit a flight down, each cool under their own climate control, each made up in proper linens. Above, the living room opens onto the street with a sofa bed, a wall TV, and a kitchen kitted out for actual cooking.

Step out and you're on the Marais's tangle of narrow streets — Rue de Bretagne and the Marché des Enfants Rouges a few minutes north, with its Moroccan counter and natural wine stalls.

Eight can sleep here without anyone drawing the short straw, which makes it a good fit for two families travelling together or a long weekend with friends. What stays with you is the soak after a long day of walking.

Sortez et la rue de Bretagne donne le tempo — les fleuristes arrosent le trottoir à 8h, quelqu'un est déjà au zinc du Progrès avec un café et un journal, l'odeur du beurre s'échappe de la boulangerie avant même que vous n'ayez décidé où aller. Le 3e s'éveille lentement le matin et ne se donne en spectacle pour personne.

Le point d'ancrage ici, c'est le Marché des Enfants Rouges, le plus ancien marché couvert de Paris, niché derrière une grille verte à mi-hauteur de la rue. Allez-y pour le stand marocain à l'heure du déjeuner — le tajine d'Alain, dégusté coude à coude à une table commune — et vous comprendrez pourquoi le quartier a encore des airs de village en très belles chaussures.
