The 17e is residential Paris at its most lived-in. Walk down to Rue de Lévis for the marché, a butcher who still wraps things in paper, a café where the regulars nod at the patron.

A couple will spread out here. Friends will linger over wine on the terrace. Families travel with a crib and a pet, if that's the shape of the trip. What stays with you is the quiet — rare, in this city, and the whole point.

En sortant, le 17e s'annonce à voix basse — larges façades haussmanniennes, un enfant qui file en trottinette vers l'école, l'odeur du beurre qui s'échappe de la boulangerie avant que la foule du métro Pereire ne s'épaississe. Le triangle autour de la Place du Maréchal-Juin retient son souffle jusque vers 8h, quand les terrasses de café se remplissent et que le fleuriste du coin de la rue de Tocqueville sort ses seaux.

Pour le matin, direction le Marché Poncelet — une vraie rue marchande, pas un décor pour touristes. On y prend un poulet rôti dans la file qui se forme toujours devant Le Coq Saint-Honoré, une part de comté chez Alléosse deux portes plus loin, et un café debout au comptoir du Caffè Vergnano. C'est ça, un samedi dans le 17e, à peu de choses près.
