Step through the door on the ground floor and the first thing you register is warmth — the low hum of a sauna waiting, water ready to turn in the jacuzzi.

Two bedrooms sit on a single level, easy and unfussy. The bathroom holds the balneo tub; the kitchen handles the rest, from morning espresso to a proper dinner in.

Outside, Les Chartrons unfolds at its own pace. The Sunday marché along the quais is the anchor — oysters, a glass of white, the Garonne a few steps beyond.

It suits six comfortably — a family with a cot, or friends who came for the wine and stayed for the long soak afterwards. That sauna, especially, is what they'll talk about back home.

Kommen Sie vor 11 Uhr für Austern aus dem Bassin d'Arcachon, die vor Ort geöffnet und mit einem Glas Entre-deux-Mers sowie einer Scheibe Roggenbrot gereicht werden. Es ist das Ritual, das die Einheimischen hüten — lautstark, ohne Eile, und die beste Einführung in die Art, wie dieses Viertel wirklich isst.
