A mezzanine tucked under the eaves, reached by a ladder-steep stair — twelve square metres that ask you to live small and live well. Pariser is a studio for someone who likes a puzzle.

Downstairs: an open kitchen with oven and dishwasher, a little dining table, wine glasses already out. The bed lives up top, low-ceilinged and cocoon-like, made up in proper linens. A workspace by the window for the morning emails.

You're in the 9e, a few streets from rue des Martyrs — the slow climb past Sébastien Gaudard's pâtisserie, the cheesemongers, the flower stalls that spill onto the pavement. Pigalle to the north, the grands boulevards south.

It suits one person, or two who travel light and like each other. What you'll remember is the coffee at the little table, the rue des Martyrs bag at your feet, the quiet of a ground-floor cour in the middle of Paris.

Trete vor die Tür und das 9. Arrondissement ordnet sich um dich herum: das Gefälle hinunter zur Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, ein Blumenhändler, der Eimer auf den Bürgersteig stellt, das Grollen der Linie 12 unter der Rue de Châteaudun. Morgens riecht es nach Butter aus der Bäckerei an der Ecke und nach Diesel von den Rollern, die vor dem Tabakladen im Leerlauf stehen. Gegen elf füllen sich die Seitenstraßen zwischen Saint-Georges und Pigalle mit Menschen, die hier offensichtlich zu Hause sind.

Für einen Kaffee läufst du fünf Minuten zur Rue des Martyrs — die Marktstraße, die bergauf Richtung Montmartre führt. KB Caféshop zaubert einen ordentlichen Flat White, doch das eigentliche Ritual ist Sébastien Gaudards Patisserie an Nummer 22: eine Tarte au Citron im Stehen gegessen, so wie es das Viertel pflegt, seit der Laden 2011 wiedereröffnet hat.
