Twelve square metres, and the first thing you notice is the mezzanine — a bed tucked up under the eaves, reached by a steep little staircase that feels more cabin than apartment.

Downstairs, the open room does the work of three: kitchen, table, television. Coffee machine on the counter, wine glasses in the cupboard, a proper workspace for the morning emails.

Step outside and you're in SoPi — South Pigalle — where rue des Martyrs runs uphill past pâtisseries, natural wine bars, and the flower shop on the corner that everyone photographs.

Best for a couple travelling light, or a solo traveller who wants a Paris address rather than a Paris hotel. You'll remember climbing up to bed.

Tritt hinaus, und die rue des Martyrs fällt vor dir den Hügel hinunter – das Fenster der Fromagerie beschlagen vom Morgen, schon eine Schlange vor Sébastien Gaudard für den Kouign-amann, und in die andere Richtung lugt das Sacré-Cœur zwischen den Dächern hervor. Der Tabac an der Ecke zur rue Victor Massé hat bis spät geöffnet; die Sexshops des alten Pigalle haben größtenteils Naturweinbars Platz gemacht, aber die Neonreklamen flackern auf dem Boulevard de Clichy noch nach Mitternacht.

Ergatere einen Hocker in der Buvette in der rue Henry Monnier – Jody Williams' winzige Gastrothèque, Croque-Monsieur und ein Glas Chinon am Zinktresen, Ellbogen an Ellbogen mit dem Nachbarn. Das ist das Lokal, das dem Kürzel SoPi seinen festen Klang verlieh, und es bestimmt noch immer den Rhythmus des Viertels – von Brunch bis zur letzten Runde.
