Tritt man hinaus, fängt der Kalkstein hier das Licht anders ein — dieses blasse Bordeaux-Blond, aus dem die Stadt gebaut ist, gemildert von einer Glyzinie, die über jemandes Tor quillt. Die Pavés sind uneben genug, um dich zu bremsen. Eine Bäckerei ein paar Türen weiter zieht ihre erste Fuhre gegen 7 Uhr aus dem Ofen, und um 8 Uhr reicht die Schlange bis zum Tabac, wo pensionierte Männer an der Theke Sud Ouest lesen.

Für Kaffee, der sich selbst ernst nimmt, geh zu Books & Coffee in der rue Saint-James, oder für etwas Älteres, Ritualhafteres, sonntagvormittags zum Marché des Capucins — bestell ein Dutzend Austern aus Arcachon und ein Glas Entre-deux-Mers am Tresen. So wacht das Viertel richtig auf.
