Glass partitions between the bedrooms, daylight moving through the whole apartment by mid-morning. Outside, Rue Cancera hums — a narrow pedestrian street where footsteps echo off old stone.

Thirty square metres, used well. A whirlpool tub in the bathroom, air conditioning for the August afternoons, a leather sofa bed in the living room that pulls out for a fifth guest. The kitchen is small but properly equipped — enough for an oyster lunch back at the table.

Sainte-Catherine is two minutes away, the Garonne a little further. Stop at Maison Darricau for chocolates, or follow the locals to the Marché des Capucins on a Sunday morning.

It suits a couple with friends, or a small family who'd rather sleep inside the old centre than outside it. What stays with you is the light — and the walk home down Cancera after dinner.
