Auteuil was a village before it was a quartier, and it still behaves like one. Walk the tree-lined streets toward Rue d'Auteuil for the market, or drift west into the Bois de Boulogne.

Step out and Auteuil arranges itself quietly: the low-rise Haussmann softens into villas and ivy, school kids in navy blazers cut across rue d'Auteuil toward the église, and the boulangerie on the corner turns out kouign-amann by 7h. It's residential Paris — the kind where the pharmacien knows the neighbours and the dry-cleaner closes for lunch.

Save Sunday morning for the marché d'Auteuil on place Jean Lorrain: rôtisserie chickens turning under the awning, oysters shucked to order, a fromager who'll cut you a wedge of Beaufort d'été and tell you exactly how long to let it warm before eating. Bring a basket — everyone else does.
