Step out and the 17e announces itself quietly: the slope of rue des Dames climbing toward Batignolles, a tabac on the corner with its red carrot sign still lit, two old men negotiating the morning at the counter. The boulangerie a few doors down sells out of pain aux céréales by ten. Montmartre is a fifteen-minute walk east, but here the pace stays local — buggies, dogs, regulars.

Aim for the marché biologique des Batignolles on Saturday morning along boulevard de Courcelles — one of only three organic markets in Paris. Go for the rotisserie chicken, the Brittany oysters shucked on the spot, and a galette de sarrasin eaten standing up. L'équipe sends everyone there at least once.
