Rue Augereau in the morning: the bakery two doors down, an old woman with a wheeled cart, the Eiffel Tower at the end of the street if you lean out far enough.

Thirty-five square metres on the ground floor, two bedrooms, a single level. Opaque window filters keep the street at arm's length. The kitchen is properly kitted — dishwasher, oven, kettle, wine glasses on the shelf — and there's a dining table that seats the six of you.

You're in the 7th, which means the Rodin gardens for a quiet hour, Rue Cler for cheese and tomatoes, and Café Constant on Rue Saint-Dominique when someone wants a proper lunch.

It suits a family or two couples travelling together — pet welcome, crib available, self check-in at any hour. What sticks is the walk home: Champ-de-Mars at dusk, then your own key in your own door.

Step out onto rue Augereau and the morning has already started without you: the Tour Eiffel framing the end of the street like a postcard nobody mentioned, parents walking children to the école on rue de la Comète, the smell of butter from Malo Boulangerie at number 7. The pavements are wide, the buildings Haussmannian, the dogs small and well-behaved.

The real anchor is rue Cler, two minutes east — a cobbled market street where the fromagerie, the fishmonger and Café du Marché still run on first names. Order a coffee standing at the zinc bar around 8h and you'll catch the quartier doing its proper round of bonjours before the day begins.
