The Tour Eiffel sits at the end of avenue de la Bourdonnais like a private landmark; locals cut through the Champ-de-Mars on their morning run, coffee in hand.

For a proper café crème, try Le Petit Cler at the top of the market street — a zinc bar, a few tables outside, the papers on a rack. Order the tartine beurre-confiture and stay for a second cup. It's the kind of place where the waiters recognise the regulars by the third visit, and by day four, that might include you.
