Le quartier is Épinettes, the sleepier cousin of Batignolles. Wander up to Rue des Moines for the boulangeries and cafés locals actually use, or walk twenty minutes south to the foot of Montmartre.

For a couple with friends visiting, or a small family passing through, this one earns its keep on the small details — self check-in at any hour, an elevator, wine glasses waiting in the cupboard.

Step out onto rue des Épinettes and it's mostly locals with tote bags — a plumber's van double-parked, someone smoking outside the tabac on the corner of rue Guy Môquet, the smell of butter from the boulangerie before you've fully woken up. The 13 rumbles past on Brochant. There are no monuments here. That's the point.

Sunday mornings belong to the marché Navier, a slim line of stalls tucked between the plane trees on rue Navier. Come for the rôtisserie chicken with potatoes cooked underneath in the dripping fat — order half a bird, walk it home in its paper bag, and the apartment smells like the quartier for the rest of the afternoon.
