Thirty square metres, used well: a whirlpool tub in the bathroom, air conditioning humming through the summer, a leather sofa bed that pulls out for a fifth guest. The kitchen handles a real dinner, not just toast.

You're on Rue Cancera, a pedestrian sliver between Place du Parlement and Place Saint-Pierre. Sainte-Catherine is two minutes away; the Garonne, five. The morning café crowd belongs to the neighbourhood.

It suits a couple with friends, or a small family who want to walk everywhere and cook something simple at night. What stays with you is the light through those glass walls at breakfast.

Step out and the limestone catches the light first — those pale Bordeaux façades that go gold by six in the evening. The trams glide past on smooth rails toward Saint-Catherine, the longest pedestrian street in Europe, and the smell from the boulangerie on the corner of rue des Remparts mixes with espresso from the zinc bars already open by 7h.

Saturday morning, walk ten minutes to the Marché des Capucins — locals call it "le ventre de Bordeaux." Order a dozen oysters from Arcachon at Chez Jean-Mi, standing up, with a glass of Entre-deux-Mers. It's loud, the floor is wet, and that's the point.
