Step out and rue Cler is a two-minute walk — the pedestrianised market street where the fromager, the fishmonger and the flower stall still take up the pavement by 9h. Look one way and the dome of Les Invalides catches the light; look the other and you're already at the Champ-de-Mars, joggers cutting diagonals across the gravel before the tour groups arrive.

Café Central at 40 rue Cler is where le quartier actually sits down — an omelette-jambon at the zinc, a glass of Chinon at lunch, the same regulars reading Le Figaro against the window. It's not a discovery, it's a habit, which is the point. Come before noon and you'll get the corner table under the awning.
