Step outside and the rue Cler is doing its quiet morning choreography — the fishmonger hosing down the pavement, the flower stand setting out peonies, a queue forming at Davoli for jambon blanc. The Eiffel Tower flickers between rooftops at the end of a side street, almost casually, as if the quartier hasn't quite decided to be impressed by it.

For coffee, walk to Café Constant on rue Saint-Dominique — a zinc bar, no reservations, a croque-monsieur that justifies the small ritual. Le matin it fills with locals reading Le Monde; by noon it's something else entirely. Order an espresso standing at the counter and you'll pay café prices, not terrace ones.
