Rue Cler is a short walk: the cheese counter at Androuet, oysters at the bar of Le Petit Cler, baguettes from the boulangerie everyone queues at. The Tour Eiffel sits at the end of several sightlines.

Built for two — a couple, perhaps with a small dog in tow (l'équipe will sort the details). What stays with you is the quiet of the quartier once the day-trippers thin out and the lamps come on.

Step out and the rue Cler is already awake — the fishmonger hosing down the pavement, an old couple choosing peaches at Davoli's, the smell of butter from the boulangerie three doors down. Cross one street and the Eiffel Tower is just there, framed by a Haussmannian rooftop, almost embarrassed to be so close.

For le matin, walk to Café Central on rue Cler and order a noisette at the bar — standing, two euros, the way the regulars do it. The waiters won't smile until your third visit, and that is precisely the point. Stay for the second one and watch the quartier do its shopping.
