Wholesalers roll racks of dresses past you on rue d'Aboukir before 8h, the passages couverts (Choiseul, du Grand-Cerf) cut through the blocks like secrets, and the boulangerie on rue Montorgueil already has a queue for the morning croissants. Everything is walkable, most of it is uphill by half a degree.

Aim for Café Compagnon at 22–26 rue Léopold Bellan when you want a proper sit-down — natural wine list, a short menu that changes with what came in that matin, and a bar you can eat at alone without feeling like you're eating alone. Order whatever the waiter recommends; the kitchen is the point.
