Push open the gate, tap the code, and the noise of rue de Bretagne falls away. What's left is a small courtyard, a 17th-century façade, and your door on the ground floor.

Inside, fifteen square metres wear their age well: exposed beams overhead, old stones and brick, teak underfoot. The kitchen is fully kitted — Nespresso, dishwasher, a foldaway table for two — and the sofa bed is a proper 140 Bultex, not an afterthought.

Step back out and you're a minute from the Marché des Enfants Rouges, Paris's oldest covered market, where Moroccan tagines and natural wine share the same lunch crowd. Andy Wahloo and the bars of rue de Bretagne keep going long after.

It's a nest for two — a couple on a long weekend, a solo traveller who wants a real quartier rather than a hotel corridor. What stays with you is the quiet: a courtyard address, in the middle of everything.

Step outside and the rue Vieille-du-Temple pulls you north or south — falafel queues at L'As by lunchtime, kids cutting through the small square in front of the Hôtel de Rohan, the smell of butter from the boulangerie on the corner before 8h. The pavements are narrow, the buildings lean slightly, and everyone seems to be walking a small dog.

Le marché des Enfants Rouges is a five-minute wander — the oldest covered market in Paris, tucked behind a red gate on rue de Bretagne. Go on a Saturday morning for the Moroccan tagine stall or Alain Miam Miam's ridiculous sandwiches, and drink your coffee standing up like everyone else.
