The buildings are Haussmannian but lived-in — geranium pots on wrought-iron balconies, a locksmith who's been there forty years, kids cutting through to école Saint-Marc.

For coffee, walk to Le Bal Café on impasse de la Défense — a former dance hall turned photo bookshop and canteen, where the flat white is honest and the carrot cake disappears by noon. Sundays, the marché des Batignolles takes over boulevard de Courcelles: oysters shucked on the spot, Breton butter, and a queue worth standing in.
