The street outside is rue Rambuteau at mid-morning: bakery bags, someone wheeling a bike past the Pompidou's colored pipes, the rattle of a café shutter going up.

Cross toward rue Vieille-du-Temple and the cobbles narrow, the boutiques thin out, and you're in the quieter Marais the locals keep for themselves.

For le matin, skip the obvious and walk five minutes to Place du Marché Sainte-Catherine — a small square hidden behind rue Saint-Antoine, chestnut trees, four or five terraces, no cars. Order a café allongé at Le Marché, sit facing the fountain, and you'll understand why people who live in the 4e stop pretending they want to move anywhere else.
