You're two minutes from Grands Boulevards métro, ten from Galeries Lafayette. Walk up rue des Martyrs for the bakeries and cheese shops, and you'll drift into Montmartre before you notice.

Built for two. A couple on a long weekend, or one traveller who wants Paris without the noise. What stays with you is the hush of la cour when you close the door behind you.

Step out and the 9e does its trick: the wide sweep of Boulevard Haussmann to your left, the covered passages — Jouffroy, Verdeau, Panoramas — dipping off the Grands Boulevards to your right, their glass roofs catching whatever light the morning gives. The tabac stays lit late, the falafel counters near rue Cadet stay later, and the Opéra Garnier sits five minutes south like a wedding cake someone forgot to cut.

For coffee, cross into Passage Jouffroy and find the small tables outside Le Valentin — a salon de thé that's been pouring since the 1980s and takes its meringues seriously. Order a café allongé and the tarte au citron, sit under the passage's glass, and watch the booksellers open their shutters. It's the kind of morning that makes the arrondissement suddenly make sense.
