Step outside and you're on the quiet end of the 2e, where the covered passages cut through the blocks like secret corridors — Passage du Grand-Cerf with its glass roof three storeys up, Passage Choiseul running long and narrow toward the Opéra. The pavements are tight, the buildings lean Haussmann-light, and by 8h the shutters of the wine bars on rue Tiquetonne are already half-up.

Make rue Montorgueil your morning. Stohrer at number 51 has been baking since 1730 — the puits d'amour is the one to order, caramelised on top, still warm if you time it right. Eat it walking, the way the marché crowd does, dodging the oyster crates outside L'Écailler and the flower buckets at the corner of rue Marie Stuart.
