Step outside and you're in one of the city's most walkable quartiers, where the boulangeries of Rue des Martyrs and the façades of Pigalle sit within a few blocks of each other.

A solo traveller or a couple who'd rather spend the day out than sprawl indoors — this is la maison for that kind of trip.

Step out the door and the 9e arranges itself around you: the slope down toward Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, a fleuriste setting out buckets on the pavement, the rumble of the 12 line under rue de Châteaudun. Mornings smell like butter from the boulangerie on the corner and diesel from the scooters idling outside the tabac. By eleven, the side streets between Saint-Georges and Pigalle have filled with people who clearly live here.

For coffee, walk five minutes to rue des Martyrs — the market street that runs uphill toward Montmartre. KB Caféshop pulls a proper flat white, but the real ritual is Sébastien Gaudard's pâtisserie at number 22: a tarte au citron eaten standing up, the way the quartier has done it since the shop reopened in 2011.
