Step out and you're in the 9e — rue des Martyrs a few minutes north, with its cheese shops, the queue at Sébastien Gaudard, and a café at every corner waiting for your order.

This one is for a couple on a short Paris trip who want to be in the city rather than watching it. What stays with you: climbing up to bed while the quartier hums on outside.

Step out the door and the 9e arranges itself around you: the slope down toward Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, a fleuriste setting out buckets on the pavement, the rumble of the 12 line under rue de Châteaudun. Mornings smell like butter from the boulangerie on the corner and diesel from the scooters idling outside the tabac. By eleven, the side streets between Saint-Georges and Pigalle have filled with people who clearly live here.

For coffee, walk five minutes to rue des Martyrs — the market street that runs uphill toward Montmartre. KB Caféshop pulls a proper flat white, but the real ritual is Sébastien Gaudard's pâtisserie at number 22: a tarte au citron eaten standing up, the way the quartier has done it since the shop reopened in 2011.
