Step out and rue des Épinettes runs quiet under the plane trees — a boulangerie two doors down with a queue at 8h, the greengrocer setting out crates of endive, an old zinc bar where the regulars stand for their café before the métro at Guy Môquet swallows them up. Le matin here belongs to the neighbourhood, not to tourists.

It's small — a dozen stalls, mostly — but the oyster man from Cancale sets up near the corner and will shuck you half a douzaine to eat standing, with a plastic cup of Muscadet, before you've even decided what's for dinner.
