Cobblestones underfoot, mansard roofs above, and somewhere a scooter kicking to life against the stone.

For coffee, walk five minutes to Boot Café on rue du Pont aux Choux — a former cordonnerie the size of a cupboard, tiled in mint green, three stools inside. Order the flat white and take it to Square du Temple-Elie Wiesel, where the pensioners feed the sparrows and le matin belongs, briefly, to you.
