Step out and you're on the quiet side of the 17e — wide pavements, a school letting out around four, the metal shutter of a fishmonger clattering up on rue Guy Môquet. The Épinettes still keeps a village rhythm: a florist next to a Portuguese épicerie, an old cinéma on avenue de Saint-Ouen, and the boulangerie two doors down where the queue starts at 7h30 for the pain des Épinettes.

The anchor is the marché des Batignolles on rue Lemercier, Saturday and Tuesday mornings — smaller than its bio cousin on boulevard des Batignolles, and better for it. Ask for a rotisserie chicken from the Breton stand at the end; l'équipe there wraps it with potatoes cooked in the drippings, and it's lunch sorted before you've even made it back to la maison.
