Built for a couple, or one traveller who likes their own company (and yes, the dog can come too). What stays with you is the garden — small, private, entirely yours.

Step out and the limestone catches the light differently here — that pale Bordeaux blonde the city is built from, softened by a wisteria spilling over someone's gate. The pavés are uneven enough to slow you down. A boulangerie a few doors up pulls its first batch around 7h, and by 8h the queue stretches past the tabac where retired men read Sud Ouest at the bar.

For coffee that takes itself seriously, walk to Books & Coffee on rue Saint-James, or for something older and more ritual, the Marché des Capucins on a Sunday morning — ask for a dozen oysters from Arcachon and a glass of Entre-deux-Mers at the counter. It's how the quartier wakes up properly.
