Made for a couple, or a small family with a little one (there's a crib and high chair). What stays with you is the garden — dinner outside, no neighbours, the city humming somewhere beyond the wall.

Step out onto the pavement and it's the smell of the boulangerie two doors down mixing with something older — the limestone facades of the old wine merchants' houses, the tramway humming toward Quinconces, the antiquaires setting out mirrors and marble-topped tables on rue Notre-Dame. Le matin here moves slowly. People walk with baguettes tucked under one arm, no rush.

Sunday belongs to the Marché des Chartrons along the quai. Locals queue at the oyster stand from Cap-Ferret, a glass of Entre-deux-Mers in hand by 11h — a ritual l'équipe swears by. Order a dozen n°3 and a slice of pâté en croûte from the charcutier two stalls down. Eat standing, facing the Garonne.
