The anchor, for us, is Café Charlot on rue de Bretagne — not for the tourists on the terrace, but for the counter inside where an espresso is 1,50€ standing up. Go early, before the brunch crowd. Order it noisette and stay ten minutes; it's the quickest way to feel local in a quartier that resists locals.
