Two minutes the other way, the arcades of Place des Vosges swallow the noise entirely and you're under stone, in shade, watching kids kick a ball against 400-year-old brick.

For le matin, walk to Café Charlot's smaller cousins along rue de Bretagne and land at Marché des Enfants Rouges — the oldest covered market in Paris, open since 1615. Order the galette from Chez Alain (the Moroccan stall, not the sandwich one), sit on a wobbly bench, and you've done the quartier properly before noon.
