Rue de Birague runs a short, straight line from Place des Vosges to Rue Saint-Antoine — a stone corridor of seventeenth-century façades that opens, suddenly, onto the arcades of the square.
Inside, 69 square metres arranged around a private cinema room: dim the lights, cue the film, stretch out. Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a fireplace in the living room, a kitchen equipped for actual cooking.
Place des Vosges is at the end of the street. Marché Bastille sets up on Boulevard Richard-Lenoir on Thursdays and Sundays — oysters, cheese, the usual small negotiations.
For a family or a group of six, it's the rare Marais address with room to spread out. What stays with you is the cinema — a Paris evening in, after a long Paris day out.
Step out and rue Vieille-du-Temple pulls you north — falafel queues at L'As by lunchtime, the Merci awning three streets over, a Vélib' station wedged between a Japanese épicerie and a gallery showing something you don't quite understand. The cobbles hold water after rain. Mornings, it's mostly delivery bikes and shopkeepers rolling out shutters; by six, the terrasses are three-deep.
For coffee, go to Boot Café on rue du Pont aux Choux — an old cordonnerie, four seats, blue tiles, a flat white that holds up against anything in the 3e. Get there before 10h or don't bother. If it's Sunday, the marché des Enfants Rouges on rue de Bretagne does the job: Moroccan tagines, oysters, a glass of Chinon standing up.

We had a wonderful stay at Jacques’ apartment. Even though it is located in the heart of wonderful cafes and shops, once you enter the apartment, it is silent and peaceful. We were there during the heatwave and I’ll admit that it was a bit warm. However, the downstairs remained much cooler and was a welcome respite from the heat! The kitchen was stocked with the basics, although we did not cook at all, and the water pressure in the bathrooms worked well.
