Step out and you're on the Batignolles side of the 17e, where the mornings smell of coffee from the counter at Le Dada on avenue des Ternes and the flower stall on rue de Lévis is already unpacking by 8h. It's quieter than Montmartre proper — wide Haussmann pavements, a school run in wool coats, the tabac on the corner selling métro tickets and lottery slips to the same faces every day.

The anchor is the marché Poncelet, a covered-feeling street market that runs most days down rue Poncelet and rue Bayen. Come for the rotisserie chicken at lunchtime — order a demi-poulet with potatoes cooked in the drippings underneath, eat it back at la maison while it's still warm.
